Aether Skies: 20 Random Encounters for Adventures Above the Clouds

Creature-Touched Heroes: Undead (D&D & RPG Guide)

One of the greatest strengths of a skyfaring campaign is that every journey can become an adventure. Unlike a road through the forest or a well-traveled trade route, the skies are constantly changing. Storms appear without warning, floating islands drift across established shipping lanes and creatures that have never touched the ground call the clouds home. Every voyage should remind players that the world above is just as wild and mysterious as any forgotten dungeon.

Random encounters are more than obstacles meant to slow the party down. The best encounters introduce new allies, reveal pieces of the setting, foreshadow future adventures or force players to make meaningful decisions. Even something as simple as another passing vessel can become the beginning of an entirely new campaign arc.

If you’re looking to add excitement to your next voyage through Aether Skies, roll a d20 or simply choose an encounter that best fits the story you’re trying to tell.

Why Random Sky Encounters Matter

Airships make travel faster, but they should never make it routine. Every journey across the sky should reinforce the feeling that your players are exploring a living world. An encounter doesn’t always have to end in combat. Some of the most memorable moments come from difficult choices, strange discoveries or unexpected opportunities.

A merchant captain asking for assistance, an ancient ruin drifting through the clouds or a mysterious signal from an abandoned vessel can create just as much excitement as a pirate attack.

d20 Random Encounter Table

1. The Silent Airship
A massive vessel drifts across the sky without sails, lights or crew visible on deck. The ship shows no signs of battle, yet no one answers repeated hails.

2. Merchant in Distress
A heavily laden cargo ship has suffered engine failure and slowly descends toward a sea of jagged floating rocks. The grateful captain offers a generous reward for assistance.

3. Aether Storm
Brilliant violet lightning dances between the clouds as unstable magical energy engulfs the surrounding sky. Spellcasting becomes unpredictable while navigation grows increasingly difficult.

4. Sky Pirates
A sleek corsair emerges from behind a cloud bank with weapons primed and boarding hooks ready. Their captain would rather intimidate than fight—unless the crew refuses to surrender.

5. Floating Shrine
An ancient temple rests upon a small drifting island. Candles still burn despite no visible caretaker, and the shrine appears untouched by time.

6. Leviathan Migration
Colossal flying creatures glide silently through the clouds. The herd ignores most vessels, but disturbing their migration could have disastrous consequences.

7. The Cloud Market
Dozens of colorful airships have gathered around a floating platform to conduct trade. Rare goods, unusual travelers and questionable bargains await anyone willing to dock.

8. Broken Sky Beacon
A navigation beacon has gone dark, making nearby trade routes dangerous. Repairing it earns the gratitude of merchants throughout the region.

9. Living Clouds
The clouds begin moving against the wind. Moments later, they reveal themselves to be enormous elemental beings curious about the tiny vessel passing through their domain.

10. The Explorer’s Journal
A weathered journal falls onto the deck, carried by an impossible gust of wind. Its pages describe a floating island that appears on no known map.

11. A Sky Funeral
A solemn procession escorts the remains of a famous explorer to their final resting place among the clouds. The ceremony is interrupted by something determined to claim the body.

12. Wreckage Field
Fragments of several destroyed airships drift through the sky. Valuable cargo remains scattered throughout the debris, but so does whatever caused the destruction.

13. The Wandering Diplomat
An ambassador requests temporary passage after their escort mysteriously vanished. Their presence quickly attracts unwanted attention from rival factions.

14. Aether Crystal Bloom
Massive crystals have grown from a floating rock, radiating magical energy that interferes with navigation. Harvesting them could make the crew wealthy—or trigger an explosive chain reaction.

15. Storm Chasers
A rival crew deliberately flies into dangerous weather, convinced that valuable treasures appear only within the heart of powerful storms.

16. Sky Whales at Play
Young sky whales surround the ship with playful curiosity. Their parents, however, may not appreciate strangers approaching their offspring.

17. Ghost Signals
Navigation crystals begin receiving distress calls from ships that disappeared decades ago. The messages repeat with unsettling clarity.

18. The Floating Garden
A beautiful island covered in exotic flowers drifts silently overhead. Every plant possesses remarkable healing properties, but something ancient protects the garden from intruders.

19. The Forgotten Fortress
Hidden within dense clouds lies a floating fortress abandoned after a long-forgotten war. Strange lights flicker inside despite centuries of apparent neglect.

20. The Impossible Horizon
Without warning, the sky changes. Familiar constellations disappear, islands vanish from sight and the crew briefly glimpses a world that should not exist before reality snaps back into place.

Turning Random Encounters into Memorable Adventures

The beauty of random encounters is that they rarely stay random for long. A pirate captain defeated early in the campaign may return months later seeking revenge. The merchant rescued from a failing engine could become an important ally. Even a simple navigation beacon might reveal evidence of a larger conspiracy when the players investigate why it was sabotaged.

Try connecting encounters together over the course of your campaign. The players will begin to feel as though every event matters, and the skies themselves will seem alive with stories waiting to unfold.

Building a Living Sky

The skies of Aether Skies should never feel empty. They are highways of commerce, battlegrounds for ambitious kingdoms, homes to magnificent creatures and gateways to mysteries that have remained hidden for centuries. Every voyage offers the chance to discover something extraordinary, and every cloud bank could conceal the beginning of your party’s next great adventure.

The next time your players announce they’re setting a course for the horizon, don’t simply skip ahead to their destination. Let the journey become part of the story. After all, some of the greatest adventures aren’t found at the end of the voyage—they’re discovered somewhere above the clouds.
